WHERE HAVE WE BEEN? WHERE ARE WE NOW?

3. OUR LAT-LONG ON GOOGLE MAPS

Whie under way, every hour we note our latitude and longitude in the ship's log as a backup to our electronic track. We're mapping the locations in Google Maps, and though it's for our own records, it means we've got a trail you can look at on the embedded map.

Though it might appear cluttered, you can zoom in and click on any position shown in the map, and see the lat-long, date, and any notes of interest (such as wildlife spotted - the whales in Bahia Magdalena are a good example). If you like, you can also view the map in full screen for better detail and less clutter. Just click on the brackets at the top right of the map.

While not live, we'll aim to update the map as soon as we can after each passage. We do this manually (so old school!) so if we're a bit slow, well, frankly it's more important to us to be out exploring...

As of 30th June 2024, our latest updated location is:

San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico

027° 56.846' N, 111° 03.376' W

1. LIVE TRACKING VIA GARMIN & NOFOREIGNLAND

As an additional safety feature, we now have a Garmin InReach Mini satellite locator, which allows us to share our live position and, in case of emergency, contact shore-based support.

We turn it on while under way, and depending on how we've set it the tracker will update our position every 10-20 minutes. This is reported live on our Garmin website page. It may open to just our latest position (showing only the blue pointer). When on the page, toggle the right uppermost corner button to either "View All" to see all our tracks since we started using the InReach, or "View Recent" to see our most recent track and position.

You can get our latest position here: SV Tino Pai (garmin.com)

A complete record of our track - now updated automatically via Garmin - can be found at our boat page on NOFOREIGNLAND here: Tino Pai | NOFOREIGNLAND

More people (not just Andy's Mum) have asked to keep an eye on where we are, so we've updated our tracking options, and now there are several!

2. LIVE TRACKING VIA PREDICT WIND

We've a PredictWind account we use for weather forecasting and passage planning, and we have the ability to track our movements as well. This only went live in late May of 2024, so it will only show our passages from then on.

The nice thing about PredictWind tracking is that it shows the wind we're experiencing at the time of viewing (if we are under way), or at least the current weather as of our last position update (if at anchor). For you WX nerds, we default to the ECMWF model on the tracker.

PredictWind uses the same data from our Garmin InReach (see #1 above).

A nice feature of this tracker is that we can add comments on our weather, progress, and other observations in the sidebar. You can find our location and track here: SV_TinoPai (predictwind.com)
